Results of the 2021 Spring schrimage

Welcome back guys! As you guy's know the past two weeks for Mules football has been huge. We got to play our first outside competition since 2019. Two division II teams from South Dakota in the North Central Conference  . Our second scrimmage is the one that I want to focus on the most though. This is because we were able to keep score and go drive for drive against Northern State.       It was a time for players who haven't gotten to play in the past to prove themselves against another opponent. Bringing another opponent in allows the coaches to see if certain players can handle the pressure of playing in front of a crowed and also playing when it really matters, and the score will put on the score board. This is different from practicing against your own team which we have been doing for the past year and a half. It was also an opportunity for our new offensive coordinator to coach our offense against another team for the first time. He ros...

What will the scrimmage look like?

Image
Hey guys! As I mentioned last blog, we will be hosting a scrimmage this Saturday against another division ll team out of North Dakota. I mentioned that we were hoping to beat them which would mean us scoring more touchdowns than them. That was before I knew what the layout of the scrimmage was going to be. Instead of doing a tradition game where we have kick off or a punt to start the drive we will just be placing the ball in different spots on the field as a situational scrimmage.   This will only be part of the competition throughout the day. We are also going to be doing one on ones and seven on seven.  This is going to cause the scoring between the two teams to be a little different. Rather than just going touch down for touchdown we will be breaking down the score by things such as a first down, tackle for a loss, forced fumble, and won reps during the one on ones. It will be a long day for the Mules football team but every player is going to get to get in and prove wha...

Our first game in over a year!

Our football team has not gotten to play against competition aside from ourselves since Nov. 30 of 2019 against Ferris State in the NCAA Division II playoffs . Ever since then we have been working toward another playoff run. On April 17th we have been given the opportunity to play against Augustana on our field in a scrimmage formatted game. This should be some good competition for us to get our feet wet again. In their last season, 2019, they had a record of 6-4 and made a playoff appearance. That year they were seeded 10th and we were seeded third in the nation. Even though we had a better record and was seeded higher, a lot can change in over a year. For example, we have lost five all conference players and two All-American players. I am sure that they have also lost some talented players with the whole Covid-19 situation too. We have yet to start scouting them , so I am unsure of the talent that they have. The week of the game is going to be when we s...

Spring Testing

Image
As I mentioned in my "Goal Setting" post, we have a testing week at the end of our long hard off season  training in the weight room and doing agilities outside. The intense training finally came to an end and it was now time to test! We knew as a group that this year of testing was going to be interesting due to the fact that COVID-19 had a huge impact in our weight room abilities the past spring and summer. A lot of our athletes were trying to catch back up to where they had left off when COVID hit and ended up shutting down weight rooms all over. With that being said, it seemed that almost everyone had caught back up and even went a little more and was working towards new PR's. In the Mule's football program we have what is called a "Quad Score" for the spring testing. This is a score that combines your 40 yard dash time, seated shotput throw, hang clean lift, and your broad jump testing. It is something that Coach Svoboda came up with about 15 years ago ...
